The
“Unknown” Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson
In today’s history, the well-known impeached President
are Bill Clinton and now Donald Trump. Fewer, people rarely know about the impeachment
of President Andrew Johnson.
Who is Andrew Johnson?
Johnson became the 17th president of the
United States upon the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Andrew
Johnson lacked a formal education, but that didn’t interfere with his future, he
became a self- education man and his wife Eliza McCardle helped him to improve
his advancement in political opportunities. In 1829, Johnson began his political
career being elected alderman of Greeneville. Years later became a mayor of a
small town. He joined the Tennessee state legislature in 1835, but wasn’t successful
with reelection, which led him back to state politics in 1839. After returning
to state politics he chose move in the direction of state senate, which was
soon elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843. He became the first Democrat
from Tennessee to be elected to the United States Congress. In 1853, he was then elected twice as governor
of Tennessee.
Andrew Johnson was the only Southern Senator who remained
in the Senate when his state seceded from the Union. In the 1864 election,
Johnson was chosen as President Lincoln’s vice-presidential running mate. He became
vice president in 1865 and about a month in a half he was President of the
United States. Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed. Soon after becoming
president, Johnson began the reconstruction of the southern states on his own
due the to Congress recess the first eight months of his term. Andrew Johnson
was charged with the reconstruction of the South and the extension of civil rights
and suffrage to former black slaves.
